Early-March 2020 Woodpile Update

We had a very mild winter. Because winter was almost non-existent I had plenty of time to catch up on my wood sawing and splitting activities.

My focus this year has been cutting up the wood I have and getting rid of rotted wood. Here’s the pile of wood for next year.

Another view of the same woodpile. I’ve been leaving the Timberwolf Log Splitter out and covering it with a tarp when it rains. I’d like to put concrete blocks under the tires and a rubber mat to stand on and to catch debris. I found a black bucket at Tractor Supply that’s the perfect size to cover the motor and keep the weather out.

I’ve been cutting a lot of smaller logs with my Husqvarna Battery Chainsaw. Logs that size are perfect for hand splitting or an easy pass through the log splitter.

Below is a picture of the two rows of smaller sized logs the Husqvarna battery chainsaw chewed through last winter.

The Husqvarna Battery Chainsaw made short, and quiet, work of them. If I had to guess I would say it took 4-5 battery charges to cut up the pile. The battery lasts so long I sometimes found myself wishing the battery would die because I was getting tired of cutting firewood.

This pile of logs was left for too long. Most of the logs were rotted and full of bugs. If I had an outdoor boiler I would have burned them but most went into the dump truck to be made into compost.

Rather than kill myself lifting or splitting logs I cut them into manageable sized ‘cookies’ I could throw in the back of the truck. It was less work to cut the logs into cookies. It was also more fun.

Last month progress came fast because the weather was so nice. I’ve got a couple more updates to come.
