Late-March 2020 Woodpile Update

Lately, most of the work has been cleaning up. There’s a ton of sawdust to rake up. I’ve been putting the sawdust on the compost pile knowing it’s going to take 3-4 years to decompose.

The sawdust has been cleaned up and the ‘cookies’ taken to the dump.

You can see fresh cedar splits on top of the split pile. I love the color of cedar heartwood. It starts dark purple and within days lightens to pink.

The top of the woodpile is about seven feet tall.

I like to store firewood vertically for two reasons. One, it takes less space and two, it keeps the wood farther away from the damp ground.

The Timberwolf log splitter has been doing a great job. I started running the splitter a little above idle and focused on enjoying being outside. I haven’t done much splitting the last couple of years. I missed it.

I’ve got enough firewood split for next year. My goal is to be two years ahead. Once you burn two-year seasoned firewood it’s hard to go back. It’s like buying lumber at the hardware store and throwing it right on the fire. The wood is that dry!

I’m looking forward to gathering wood over the summer and sharing more great information on SawsandSplitters.com with you.

  1. Love the update! That’s a nice pile! We have been splitting a fair amount of oak and occasionally get in to some locust. We have a older Huskee splitter that works well. Hope all is well!

    • Those are some nice types of wood. I’ve burnt plenty of oak and I’ve heard locust throws a lot of heat. The difference between splitters comes down to marketing, they all do a good job with different features. I’ve been running my splitter just above an idle and enjoying being outside and it performs perfectly well, who cares how many cords it can split an hour I don’t want to move that fast anymore. Thanks for commenting!
